Find out everything about the regulations regarding maximum speed in Germany and what role your vehicle and trailer play.
Speed limits inside and outside built-up areas in Germany
There are special speed limits for car trailers in Germany. In built-up areas, a maximum speed of 50 km/h is permitted, unless otherwise restricted. Outside of built-up areas, you may drive your trailer at a maximum of 80 km/h, unless your trailer is expressly approved for 100 km/h and you have the corresponding sticker.
minimum speeds on motorways
While there is no minimum speed limit for driving with a trailer outside of motorways, you must drive at least 60 km/h on motorways.
Consequences of speeding
If these speed limits are exceeded, you risk fines and points on your license. In addition to these consequences, excessive speed also leads to further consequences in the form of an increased risk of accidents. For this reason, we recommend that you always stick to the specified speed limit and adhere to the speed recommended by TREILER as the manufacturer.
The following technical requirements apply for the 100 km/h sticker:
- The trailer must be designed for a speed of at least 100 km/h.
- The towing vehicle must have an anti-lock braking system (ABS).
- The trailer's tires should have a speed index of at least "L" and be no older than six years.
- For trailers without dampers, the empty weight of the towing vehicle x 0.3 applies to the total weight of the trailer
- With damper, the formula applies empty mass towing vehicle x 1.1
Costs for the 100 km/h sticker
If you want to drive your trailer faster than 80 km/h, you will need a corresponding 100 km/h sticker. You can apply for this from your vehicle dealer or a testing center for a fee. In addition to the cost of the sticker, there are usually also registration fees.
Why the 100 km/h rule?
The regulations for driving with a trailer are primarily intended for safety reasons. The changed driving characteristics of a trailer require an adapted driving style.
Advantages of the 100 km/h approval
A 100 km/h approval for your trailer offers several advantages:
- Better integration into traffic: You can drive more smoothly in traffic and have to brake less often.
- Time saving: You reach your goal faster.
- Easier to overtake trucks: You can overtake trucks more easily on motorways.
In summary: The regulations for trailers are there to ensure the safety of all road users. If you stick to the speed limits and observe the other regulations, you can travel with your trailer without any worries.
